The Independent Asylum Commission (IAC) is conducting a nationwide citizens’ review of the UK asylum system, collecting evidence from several hundred individuals and organisations, through public hearings, written and video evidence, and research. The Commission will publish its final conclusions in May, June and July 2008, and will include recommendations for reform, but its Interim findings, announced on 27 March 2008, have found the UK asylum system "marred by inhumanity" and "not yet fit for purpose".
Amongst the Commission's conclusions is the concern that "some of those seeking sanctuary, particularly women, children and torture survivors, have additional vulnerabilities that are not being appropriately addressed" and that detention is overused.
