Forced Marriage Questions and Answers

Is a forced marriage valid?

Is a forced marriage valid?

If a person has been forced into marriage, it may be possible for the marriage to be annulled if it took place after 1973 and either party to the marriage did not validly consent to it as a consequence of duress, mistake or unsoundness of mind.

A victim of a forced marriage may prefer to apply for an annulment, as an annulment does not have the same stigmata attached to it as a divorce.
