Child Witnesses Questions and Answers

Who can I ask for help and advice?

Who can I ask for help and advice?

• The Witness Service- all crown court and many magistrates’ courts have a witness servicewith trained voluntary workers available to help all witnesses and their families.

• Child Witness Supporters- some areas will also have child witness supporterswho act as a link between the child and the court.

• Local Victim Support Schemes-can also provide help and advice to parents and carers. However, they are not able to assist in cases where the defendant is a family member.

• Children's Services Departments- Can offer support to young witnesses where the defendant is a family member.

A Child Witness Pack is also available and the prosecution team should ensure that the packs have been distributed by the police in the appropriate cases. The aim of the pack is to help child witnesses between the ages of 5 - 15 by explaining the criminal justice system and their role within it.

A parent should also ask the police about what help is available to prepare their child for court.
