Child Witnesses Questions and Answers

What are my child’s rights?

What are my child’s rights?

Publication- It is an offence to publish any details that could lead to the identification of a child or young person who is involved in a legal case, unless the judge specifically allows this.

Waiting time- Even though waiting time at court is kept to a minimum, on the actual day of the trial, delays can occur. Court staff will try to ensure that the child does not see the defendant outside the courtroom, they can arrange for the child to wait in a room away from the public area.

Privacy- All courts have public seating at the back of the courtroom, but the prosecution can sometimes ask the judge or magistrate if members of the public can leave the courtroom.
