Child Witnesses Questions and Answers

How can I prepare my child for court?

How can I prepare my child for court?

The local police or child protection unit should inform the parent about a child witness preparation scheme. This will enable a child supporter to prepare the child for court, however, they are not able to discuss the evidence with the child. The child supporter should report back to the police and prosecution if they are of the opinion that the child will not be capable of giving evidence.

The defence should be notified if the child has received pre-trial preparation. It is important that any pre-trial preparation does not interfere with the child’s perception of what happened or influence the child’s evidence in any way.
