The Unit worked on projects in Turkey for a number of years. Initially members of the Unit undertook an assessment visit to Turkey to research into the key legal issues affecting children and to assess the feasibility of setting up a child law centre.
The Unit also worked on projects to promote and secure children’s rights in South East Turkey. The Unit conducted an assessment of the situation of child protection in Turkey. The assessment focussed on Gaziantep, one of the South Eastern cities, which has a large, internally displaced population.
In conjunction with the British Council and with funding from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, training on children's rights and child protection; was delivered to police officers in 2001.
The Unit also assisted in the organisation of the Conference - "Are Children’s Rights Human Rights?" which was attended by 100 child care professionals, politicians, human rights workers, lawyers, judges, police, paediatricians etc.
