International Programmes: Sudan

  • Project: Child Protection in Traditional and Statutory Law: An analysis Sudan Map
  • Identifying the main child protection issues in the law in the light of international standards.
  • Funding Sources: Save the Children UK

In 2005, The Children's Legal Centre carried out an analysis of child protection; concerns in customary law in South Sudan for Save the Children UK. The objective of this project was to identify the main child protection issues in customary law in South Sudan, which are in conflict and / or compliance with international child rights standards and to identify a strategy through which these can be appropriately addressed in the law reform process. The analysis focused on Nuer and Dinka customary law and took place through community consultations.

A child rights training course was also devised and delivered for the local Save the Children child protection officers in South Sudan.
